Hi! My name is Martins Zaumanis.
I‘m a materials scientist and group leader at the Swiss national research center Empa. I also wrote the Peer Recognized book series and created the PeerRecognized.com blog.
I grew up in a working-class family in Latvia, got a scholarship to study in the USA and worked my way up to a leadership role at one of the world’s top research institutions by acquiring academic career skills that every scientist should have.
Through the Peer Recognized Academy courses, I want to share my experience to empower young scientists do impactful research more productively.

Summary of the courses I offer
Write impactful research papers using the LEAP academic writing approach. It’s a blueprint for first understanding the research results and then convincingly describing them in a research paper.

62 videos, watch on any device

4 h bite-sized videos & 12 h of practice

35 quizzes, games & assignments
Create research data visualizations that tell a story by following 8 simple progressions. Convincing data charts help research papers stand out and make scientific presentations memorable.

2.5 h bite-sized videos & 12 h of practice

42 quizzes, games & assignments
Overcome stage fright and give scientific presentations that explain, inspire and motivate using the Five-S presenting pyramid. …because confident presenting is a skill rather than a talent.

3.5 h bite-sized videos & 3 h of practice

21 quizzes, games & assignments

In addition to the courses, I hold a presentation before starting the courses. This helps the students to get to know me, increases their interest in the courses, and briefly introduces the students to the course content.
Webinar: 10 Ways to Increase the Impact of Your Research
Research can make a difference only if others get to know about it. In this presentation, the participants will learn 10 ways in which they can make their papers stand out, presentations remembered, proposals approved, and their names recognized. Duration: 1.5 hours.
Course concept
Online courses are often plain boring. It is tough to sit through hours of videos where a moving head, briefly interrupted by some slides, explains a particular concept. Most people dose off and never finish such courses, even if the content is good.
That is why from the ground up, the Peer Recognized Academy courses are interactive. The courses combine bite-sized lectures with quizzes, tasks, and simulations.
This approach of combining theory with practice quickly allows the students to acquire the concepts and become ready to apply them in their daily work.

Theory
Each course first lays out a specific actionable approach in bite-sized videos

Practice
Participants practice through quizzes, assignments, and simulation games

Resources
Participants receive resources like templates, worksheets, and cheat sheets.
TESTIMONIALS
Took this online course during my first year in PhD. It’s a great intro to scientific writing and data visualization with condensed and consistent essential information from and expert’s experience. Very high quality, well prepared and implements various techniques of student engagement. Helpful for making the first LEAP into scientific writing.
De Ba
The presentation got the attendees – who were all scientists – extremely curious about how to give an incredible scientific talk. The “common mistakes in the presentation” were practically described, which is so helpful in creating an awesome science presentation.
Thank you for enriching our experience.

From the very first pixel on the screen all the way to getting accepted in the most suitable journal, the LEAP research paper writing approach shows how to become effective at writing impactful papers

Laura Konstantaki
Academic writing coach, ETH domain
With the participation of 46 early stage Scandinavian researchers, Martins Zaumanis provided valuable insights on how to structure, emphasize, and deliver presentations with confidence and impact. His tips and tricks will undoubtedly help young scientists to improve their presentation skills and succeed in their future endeavors. Thank you, Martins!

Arita Dubnika, The Scandinavian Society for Biomaterials
I am a young researcher starting my PhD with no experience in paper writing. I took Martin’s Paper Writing Course hoping to get enough knowledge to overcome the anxiety of approaching a new task for the first time, starting from zero, that other paper writing courses could not.
After completing the class, I now feel like I could write my first paper anytime, without struggles, and make a great job of it at the first attempt: Martin’s class really explains the different nuances I should keep in mind while writing and reinforces the important takeaways with interactive quizzes. The class spans the entire process, from the first draft to getting published (getting through the reviewing process and all that). I found particularly interesting and helpful the section on the results and the final simulation on how to get through arguments and disputes with the co-authors during publishing (which happens quite often). I would recommend this to everyone just starting a PhD.
The vision – a productive scientist
We learn best when combining knowledge with practice. So my courses don’t simply provide information. Instead, each module first lays out a specific actionable approach in bite-sized videos. The participants then practice using quizzes, tasks, and simulations.
Throughout the courses, the students receive resources like templates, worksheets, and cheat sheets that allow them to rapidly apply the knowledge in practice.

What the students Get
Templates & Resources

To enable rapid application of the course content, the participants will receive various templates and additional resources.
For example, in the paper writing course, the students receive a paper template that includes key sentence structure and writing prompts.
Cheat Sheets

Each course is based on one core concept. The students receive one-page summary cheat sheets that summarize this content. This way, they can easily remember the approach whenever they feel stuck.
You will also receive data visualization and scientific illustration cheat sheets.
Simulation games

During the courses, students live through different challenges in simulation games. Examples include attending a conference, co-authoring a paper, and answering review comments.
The simulation games prepare the students for when then challenges arise in real life. Plus, they are fun to complete.
Comprehensive eBooks

At the end of each course, the students receive an eBook. This allows them to recall everything they learned during the course without needing to re-watch it. This is efficient.
Course completion certificate

Upon 100% completion of the course, the students receive a course completion certificate that allows them to prove their new skills.
